The Cutting Edge of Construction

Firm wants recruits to work with advanced diamond machinery

DIAMONDS are not the first thing you think of when considering a career in the construction trade, but that’s exactly what one Lanarkshire firm is working with. Clyde Valley Drilling (CVD) are looking for a number of new trainee diamond drilling professionals keen to make their mark on the industry.

The Eurocentral-based company has flourished in the decade since its launch. It employs 75 people and has grown to a turnover of £5million, establishing itself as the forerunner in diamond drilling, concrete sawing, cutting and finishing services, and fire protection. Their projects include nuclear decommissioning work at Dounreay, plus creating a concrete ‘superfloor’ in the basement of the newly refurbished Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

The company is looking to recruit experienced diamond drillers and concrete cutters as well as people with some experience in the construction industry who would like to train to become a driller or cutter. Using manufactured diamonds, this machinery is in a league of its own when it comes to construction drilling. The drills can use up to £1000 worth of diamonds a day, but provide a clean, safe method of working on buildings.

Training is a big part of CVD’s culture and successful applicants will be trained to NVQ level. Training will include a combination of computer-based study and on-job training with experienced drillers, in a ‘buddying’ situation. Owen Barrett, managing director of Clyde Valley Drilling, said: “We are delighted at the prospect of new trainees joining the CVD training scheme. The industry is fairly new – around 10 years old – and this training scheme is the first of its type in the UK.

“Over the years CVD has become a major player in this niche market, particularly in Scotland. “We tend to set the pace as opposed to follow it and our operatives are in demand as our drills can cut through concrete and steel very quickly in a clean and safe manner.

“This eliminates the old fashioned traditional method of working with jackhammers which can cause nerve damage due to the intense
vibrations.”

Applicants should apply on line to www.cvdltd.co.uk
