UKAEA Contract Bulletin: Feb 2006 Dounreay Site News
Cutting Up History
In our August 2005 edition we told how the low active drain (LAD) at Dounreay, that traverses a large part of the site, required to have part of it diverted, to accommodate the enabling works associated with the shaft isolation programme.
The work involved removing some 120 metres of the fifty-year old duct and creating a new 158 metre-long diversion, containing stainless-steel pipework and secondary containment. This involved stripping away many thousand tonnes of soil, some of which was either radiologically or hydro-carbon contaminated.

The £2.75 million contract is being carried out by Edmund Nuttall Ltd, with sub-contract work being carried out by JGC Engineering and Technical Services Ltd, RWE Nukem Ltd, Environmental Reclamations services Ltd, and Clyde Valley Drilling.
The new diverted section of the LAD has been commissioned and is fully operational, with the focus now shifting to removing completely the redundant section of the drain.
Recently, the first section of this concrete entombed 18" cast iron drain was removed. The work was carried out by operators working in air-line suits, under a strict radiological
monitoring regime, within a radiological containment.
It was a historic moment, according to George Polson, project manager with the historical waste facilities enabling works project team: "A considerable amount of work had to be
achieved before we reached this point," said George.
"All of the team, UKAEA staff and all the contractors staff have worked very hard these past few months. Watching the safe removal of the first section was the culmination of this effort. In thanking them for their efforts, we now must focus on achieving a safe conclusion to the project."
The project is due for completion later this spring, and hopefully, later, we will bring you a final update.
(This cutting work was completed 3 months ahead of schedule, as a direct result of CVD methodology and our highly trained and motivated staff.)
